4. The operational expenses (2010-11) from the following sources:
· Fee and other Income 77%
· Government Grants 16%
· Interest on Reserves 7%
5. a) Partnership with Corporate Sector
IBA’s services to the corporate sector for continuing professional education were channeled mainly through the CEE. It has been conducting leadership development and capacity building programs for public and corporate sector organizations. From Jan to June 2011, client specific courses were held for the Executives of Atlas Group of Companies ( this was a repeat program), Sanofi Aventis, HBFC, REMPACK and Government of Baluchistan.
In addition to these customized courses, 14 open courses were offered for the Executives of various corporate and private sector corporations on different topics.
b) Specialization in Entrepreneurship
6. The Center for Entrepreneurial Development (CED), IBA has launched a Specialization in Entrepreneurship from Fall 2011. The curriculum will integrate core business courses, social science courses, and Entrepreneurship electives into the four-year program, which will enable students to develop the necessary skills to become entrepreneurial in thinking and practice. Additionally, the integrated teaching methodology that the CED plans to offer will correlate the disciplines by laying emphasis on an approach to the holistic learning.
7. The Specialization in Entrepreneurship would inspire potential students to think like an entrepreneur, by being innovative and creative in their thoughts and action. Some students who are fortunate enough to have a legacy of entrepreneurship in their family may want to help grow the family business, or learn how to improve the business by applying creative ideas. Other students may want to become entrepreneurs after they graduate, or at some point in their careers, and may have the idea, but do not have the opportunity or funding to support their idea and make it possible. These students would be provided with a platform to experiment, and realize their ideas. Furthermore, the entrepreneurial spirit may appeal to some who are looking to explore and experience a different way of running businesses. Rather than pursuing the conventional specializations that we have today, an Entrepreneurship Specialization would open new doors for potential candidates, who may be looking to become skilled at a new field.
8. The Entrepreneurship Specialization is in collaboration with the Babson College of Entrepreneurship which is the number 1 Entrepreneurship school in US.
c) IBA Alumni Network
Following activities were undertaken in Alumni Network:
9. Alumni Database
Now with the graduation in June, 2011, IBA’s network has expanded to over 9000 Alumni graduates working and living all over the world. The alumni database which stores the record of all the students who have graduated from IBA, is updated on a continuous basis through an online registration and updating system on the alumni website. To date we have the updated information on 5816 students.
10. Alumni Newsletter
The Alumni e-newsletter has proved to be a useful medium to keep the alumni updated about the developments and happenings at IBA. The fourth issue of IBA Alumni e-newsletter has been sent in July 2011. This newsletter is not only to keep the Alumni informed about the activities of IBA but also a vehicle for the alumni to provide their suggestions, feedback, comments and etc.
11. Formation of Chapters
The IBA Alumni chapters in Dubai and Canada were launched in 2010 and now work for launching additional chapters in UK, Saudi Arabia and Islamabad are underway. IBA Alumni Association was revived at Karachi after a lapse of almost a decade and elections of office bearers were held on Nov 29, 2009.
12. Mentoring
The practice of Alumni mentoring dinners continued in fall and spring this year. At thisr event organized by the Alumni volunteers, small groups of graduating classes meet to discuss their career aspirations and seek advice on the ways they can improve themselves to compete in the job market. The second annual Alumni Reunion was held on April 30, 2011. Alumni have also been invited to serve on the interview panels for assessing new entrants to IBA and some of them are engaged in holding mock interviews for the graduating students. The level of participation of Alumni in the activities of IBA, particularly the students, is gradually on rise.
13. Campus Tour
The Alumni Department has organized campus tours for the Alumni to visit the institution and see the changes that have taken place and that are still in the process. Different Alumni are taken on campus tours such as invited Alumni, guest speaker Alumni, Tree planting Alumni, Prospective Donors etc. They are taken to various places of the campus including the project office where they are also shown maps of the proposed IBA structure. Alumni have given a good response to these tours.
14. Plant IBA Green (Tree Plantation)
The initiative to encourage the IBA Alumni to plant a tree at IBA that will serve as a tangible reminder of their presence at IBA. This initiative had an overwhelming response in the beginning and many of the alumni donated a token amount of Rs. 10,000/- for a tree in their name in support of this new venture. A total of 75 trees have been planted so far.
15. On-line Donation Facility
The online donation portal where the Alumni can donate online through their credit or debit cards and make online funds transfers to IBA from the comfort of their home or office is fully functional, But the response rate is not that high.
16. Alumni Website
The Alumni Website is being revamped to make it more user-friendly. The website will have options for Alumni to connect to each other and to their Alma-mater. Moreover, the website will consist of a Job Portal that will allow the Alumni to advertise and find jobs. The website designing have been outsourced and shall be completed by the end of 2011.
17. Alumni Relations
As part of its Alumni Engagement Initiatives, the IBA Alumni department is reaching out to the Alumni working in different companies by visiting their organizations formally to update our Alumni on activities and news from the Alma-mater.
On May 05, 2011 42 Alumni at Unilever met with the IBA Alumni team and Dr. Ishrat Husain. They learnt about the developments that have taken place at IBA and shared their memories.
The IBA Alumni Session at the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) was attended by 28 Alumni working there (from 1975 -2010 batches). They expressed their pride at the developments taking place at IBA which will help the current students excel in their professional lives. Another session was organized at the HSBC Bank which was attended by 34 alumni working there. The event started with the opening address by Dr Ishrat Husain followed by the presentation by Mr. Zafar Siddiqui. The Alumni Bankers at HSBC were specially delighted to learn that IBA is now teaching Chinese and Arabic to current students and requested to be enrolled in such a course at IBA for their professional development within the HSBC group. Citibank was also visited where presentation on restructuring of IBA was given. In the Standard Chartered Bank of Pakistan visit, 120 Alumni attended the session and IBA received a good response from them. Future visits in multinationals, financial institutions and local companies are planned where there are a sizeable number of IBA graduates.
18. Alumni Student Centre
The Center, which would be constructed at the cost of Rs.200 million, would be centrally air-conditioned and include common areas, lounges, cafeteria, Dining halls, indoor play areas, Gymnasium, Amphitheatre, Green Rooms, Book Shop, Tuck Shop, etc. The construction of the Student Center shall commence in July 2011. There are 40 units of Rs 5 million each. Alumni can purchase these units to contribute towards construction of the center. So far 4 units have been bought by Alumni. IBA Alumni at Unilever have recently pledged their financial support for IBA by committing to finance the Student Lounge at the IBA Alumni Student Center by donating Rs. 5 million over the next four years. IBA has decided to name this lounge after the Unilever Alumni. A donor wall shall also be made onto which the names of the donors shall be inscribed.
19. Class Gifts
The classes of 1986 and 2011 have come forward to present IBA with a class gift for the scholarship of students. Through its active participation on the online groups and close cohesiveness among the batch members, the classes have taken a step to provide the less privileged students with funds to pursue their careers. The class of 2011 has donated a total of Rs.1.5 million. Both the MBA and BBA batches have shown active participation. The amount contributed so far shall help at least 7 deserving students to obtain 100% scholarship for 2 semesters. The Class of 1986 has pledged to raise Rs.6 million for an endowment fund out of which Rs. 2.0 million have already been raised. The fund is expected to support two to three student scholarships every year.
20. Alumni Reunion
IBA Alumni Reunion was organized at the Avari Towers on April 30, 2011. All the classes of 2010, 2000, 1990, 1980, 1970, 1960 and those of 2009, 1999, 1989, 1979, 1969 and 1959 were invited to these reunions. The attendance was quite impressive.

The main sources of Scholarship Fund are:
i. Syed Mumtaz Saeed Scholarship
ii. Lakson Tobbaco
iii. Feroze Textile Ltd.
h) National Talent Hunt Program, and Sindh Talent Hunt Program
24. For this year this program has been a major success as out of batch 64 students (36 for NTHP and 28 for STHP) 23 students have secured their seats in different IBA Programs.
These students will be provided full scholarship and all living expenses till the end of their program with the help of Ihsan Trust (a subsidiary of Meezan Bank) and Sindh Government
i) United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
25. This is an area where we have come across a major obstacle. IBA had entered into a contract (funding arrangement) with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to support the establishment of “Centre for Entrepreneurial Development (CED)” at the IBA Karachi on February 23, 2010. Under this Contract, IBA entered into affiliation with Babson College which is recognized internationally for its entrepreneurial leadership in a changing global environment. Babson will transfer their knowledge of managing university (Administratively & Academically) dedicated to provide Entrepreneurship education. Among many other things in the agreement, Nine (09) IBA-CED faculty members will travel to Babson for a semester exclusive training. USAID has walked out of this agreement sighting that they do not have funds to give to IBA anymore. This has put us in an embarrassing position with Babson as we committed to give them $1 million over a period of 3 years. So far only $186K have been given to them, out of which 53K have been given by IBA and the balance through the first tranche of USAID disbursement before they pulled out.
j) IBA Advisory Council
26. The IBA Advisory Council meets on a fortnightly basis, where the members discuss and use their networks for Fund Raising. The Council have identified some leading 100 businessmen, corporate leaders where individual members are approaching them to help IBA in its funding campaign.
k) The Friends of IBA Trust (FIBAT)
27. A Trust by the name The Friends of IBA Trust (FIBAT) is in the registration process with Registrar Inland revenue. A close link will be established between the IBA Advisory Council and the FIBAT. The creation of such a Trust is necessary to ensure full disclosure and transparency of Funds received from the donors investments made, expenses incurred etc. and to control the affairs of the trust by donors themselves. Draft trust deed and draft constitution for creating a trust have been prepared and names of the Trustees (see Annexure-3) have been finalized.
28. All funds accruing to the Endowment Fund / Endowed Chairs will be administered by the Friends of IBA Trust (FIBAT) that will comprise donors who have contributed or donated or pledged a minimum amount of Rs. 30 million to IBA. At present individual statement of accounts for each donor is being prepared at the end of the fiscal year and will be sent to the respective donors as on June 30, 2011. All the donor accounts are audited by reputed firms of external auditors and are available for inspection. These accounts will be reviewed and scrutinized by the Trustees in the future.
RECOMMENDATION
30. The original target of Rs. 2.6-3.0 billion approved for the period 2009-10 to 2013-14 has been raised to Rs. 4.6 billion. The actual commitments received so far amount to Rs.2.2 billion leaving a gap of Rs. 2.4 billion that has to be mobilized in the next three and a half years
