Lecture: Values Based Leadership – 13/02/2010

SPEAKER: MR ASAD UMAR, CEO ENGRO

Leaders are role models, who keep their values and lead a group of people towards the achievement of a set of collective goals. Same is the story of Engro’s success, a prime example of a local company taking on and beating an established MNC (Nestle). In 2009, Engro took Nestles share to become the market leader in UHT milk.

IBA Leadership Club had the opportunity to organize the DLS of Mr. Asad Umar, the CEO of one of the well established companies in Pakistan, Engro. Engro’s success has been founded on pure ethics and values. They believe that their values and ethical conduct is their basic strength that has enabled them to attain success. Values, sustained and developed over a long time, have helped Engro prosper.

The speaker stressed upon Engro’s Health and Safety Policy. Their prime objective is to look after the health and safety concerns of the people employed in the company. Proper infrastructure, methodology, systems, training and awareness have helped Engro to become a safe company for its people. With better and safer work environment, people can focus on work thus increasing their productivity.

Ethics has been the foundation of Engro Empire. The company has laid down a firm ethics policy and framework. The policies are shared with one and all. When new hires come to the company, they are made familiar with the ethical policies. Proper training is designed to deal with the ethical aspects of the business. Annual circulation of ethics policies and awareness building slogans also reinforce the ethical environment of the company. Proper whistle blowing mechanisms are also in place for controlling and monitoring unethical practices.

Engro considers its people as their most valuable asset. The company focuses upon development of its employees through leadership building, continuous improvement training, and development.

The success of Engro has various lessons for us to learn. It is a Pakistani company and run by Pakistani people. It is a role model for us to follow and have a belief in our abilities. If a local company can achieve such growth and success by keeping its values, so can many other.
