RESULTS OF THE FIRST GEM PAKISTAN STUDY REVEALED

Karachi, Dec 24, 2011: The results of the first GEM Pakistan Study were revealed at a ceremony at the City Campus of the Institute of Business Administration (IBA, Karachi). The ceremony was organized by the Center for Entrepreneurial Development at IBA and was attended by a number of international and local delegates who received a keen insight into the existing entrepreneurial culture of Pakistan. The Honourable Sind Minister, Mr. Murad Ali Shah was the Chief Guest on the occasion.

Speaking to the gathering, Dr. Shahid Qureshi said, "I am pleased to announce that the long-awaited results of the first GEM Pakistan study pioneered by the Center for Entrepreneurial Development (CED) at IBA (Karachi) are being released in a public ceremony today."

Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) is an international research effort to promote entrepreneurship. Implemented in more than 80 countries, GEM studies are conducted under the auspices of the Global Entrepreneurship Research Association, a non-profit academic forum. Their results help create awareness and enhance learning about the entrepreneurial process to improve support for entrepreneurs and business ventures.

The GEM Pakistan project was launched under the sponsorship of IBA (Karachi), after securing Pakistan's membership in this prestigious world forum. The state of entrepreneurship and start-up business activity was examined acutely, including a comprehensive adult population survey across Pakistan. Detailed interviews were conducted with top national experts to discuss key conditions that govern a country's entrepreneurial development, such as government policies and programs, education and training, financial support, R&D and technology transfer facilities, access to professional services, enabling physical infrastructure, market openness and cultural and social norms that impact entrepreneurial business activity.

"The GEM Pakistan Report will help entrepreneurs, policy makers and educators in Pakistan to devise an appropriate strategy to develop, inculcate and promote an entrepreneurial culture in Pakistan," said Dr. Ishrat Husain, the Dean and Director of IBA (Karachi).

“After 3 years of our hard work, Pakistan has now joined the community of entrepreneurially conscious group of nations represented in the GEM. This will help us benchmark Pakistan’s national efforts in leading the entrepreneurial development of the country for which I congratulate IBA in playing a prominent role,” said Dr. Sarfraz Mian, Head of GEM Pakistan project.

Adding to this, Mr. Murad Ali Shah said, “I believe that the GEM Pakistan findings will enhance our understanding of the entrepreneurship phenomena in Pakistan and promote the awareness for it. I congratulate the GEM Pakistan Team on the completion of this first landmark study of various entrepreneurship characteristics in Pakistan that allows us to benchmark with the community of entrepreneurially active nations including our peer countries.”
