SMCS Pre-Orientation Sets the Stage for the Class of 2029
August 19, 2025: The School of Mathematics and Computer Science (SMCS) welcomed the Class of 2029 and ease their transition into university life and introduce them to the academic and professional community at IBA. The event served as the first step in helping students connect with their peers, faculty, and mentors as they embark on their educational journey.
Addressing the incoming batch, Dr. S. Akbar Zaidi, Executive Director of IBA, spoke about the importance of viewing university as more than just a place of study. He highlighted the opportunities for growth, exploration, and engagement that define the IBA experience, urging students to embrace challenges with an open mind and make the most of their time on campus.
The academic leadership of SMCS also extended a warm welcome. Dean Dr. Shakeel A. Khoja, together with Dr. Shahid Hussain, Chairperson of Computer Science, and Dr. Amir Bashir, Chairperson of Mathematics, outlined the vision of the School, shared expectations for the programs, and reassured students of the support structures in place to help them thrive.
To bridge academia with industry, a panel discussion was held featuring leaders from the technology and entrepreneurial landscape. Ahmed Ayub, Co-Founder of Airlift Technologies, and Farukh Omar, CEO of SpurSol, joined the conversation moderated by Professor Jawwad Farid. They offered perspectives on the skills and mindset required to succeed in fast-changing industries. Adding to the dialogue, Jehan Ara, CEO and Founder of Katalyst Labs, inspired students with her personal journey, encouraging them to pursue careers in technology with confidence, curiosity, and determination.
The session also created space for peer-to-peer learning. Senior students from the Classes of 2027 and 2028 shared candid advice on navigating academic demands and campus life, while alumni from the Classes of 2023 and 2024 reflected on their experiences beyond IBA and how their education shaped their professional paths.
